Hans-Fallada-Museum Carwitz
Former residence of Hans Fallada in Carwitz with original rooms, exhibitions on his life and work, and a large lakeside property.
Over het museum
Hans Fallada acquired a half-timbered house with a large property in the village of Carwitz in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft around 1933 and lived there with his family until 1944. The writer, his mother, his first wife Anna, and his daughter Lore are buried in the Carwitz cemetery.
In 1977 the Literaturzentrum Neubrandenburg set up a memorial in the former study. After the town of Feldberg took over the estate in 1992, the Hans-Fallada-Gesellschaft, founded in 1991, began operating the museum in 1995. Between 1996 and 2002 the house was renovated in keeping with its listed status and largely restored to its 1938 condition; the museum reopened on May 1, 2001, and a further expansion phase followed in 2006/07.
The exhibition extends across seven rooms of the residence. The study, dining room, and veranda are furnished with original furniture, documents, and photos. In the former bedroom, the exhibition "Hans Fallada. Lebensorte" (Hans Fallada. Places of His Life) traces the stages of his life, the children's room is about Fallada as a children's book author, and on the upper floor a film room shows documentaries. The barn is used for special exhibitions and events; the estate of roughly 15,000 square meters also includes a bee house, a boathouse, a triangular flower bed, and a seat on the lakeshore. The operator is the Hans-Fallada-Gesellschaft, which also maintains an archive on the author's life and work in the house.
