Hauffs Märchenmuseum
Literature and local history museum in Baiersbronn about Wilhelm Hauff's fairy tale "Das kalte Herz" (The Cold Heart) and life in the old Murg Valley.
Over het museum
The small museum in Baiersbronn's Oberdorf is dedicated to the writer Wilhelm Hauff (1802–1827) and his Black Forest fairy tale "Das kalte Herz." Hauff presumably had family connections to the village; a wealthy forest owner from Schwarzenberg is considered a possible model for the character of Holländer-Michel. The museum is housed in a historic building that also contains municipal offices, and since its founding it has been supported with loans from the Arbeitsstelle für literarische Museen in Baden-Württemberg at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach.
The tour begins with Hauff's life stages and a selection of his fairy tales in various editions. Starting from "Das kalte Herz," the exhibition shows how raftsmen, charcoal burners, glassmakers, and timber merchants lived and worked in the upper Murg Valley; one focus is the large-scale timber trade in the Black Forest in the second half of the 18th century. The upper floor deals with glassmaking and the timber trade in the age of industrialization.
For adults there is a reading zone as well as listening and video stations; for children, a separate reading area with fairy-tale books, a video station, and a play and craft corner. Storytelling hours take place regularly.
