Over het museum

Haus Samson on Leer's Rathausstraße goes back at its core to the late 16th century. After heavy damage in the Thirty Years' War, it received in 1643 the show facade, preserved to this day, in the style of Dutch early Baroque. It owes its name to the biblical figure Samson; a sign on the house shows him fighting a lion. Following Dutch custom, houses at that time bore their own names.

Over the centuries the uses changed: among other things, cakes were baked in the house and tobacco was processed, before a wine and spirits business was founded around 1800. Through marriage, the business later passed to the Wolff family, who still run it under their name today. After a sale in the late 19th century, the family bought the building back in 1927.

The museum rooms on the upper floors were originally storage lofts. In the 1950s, Claas Wolff in particular furnished them with furniture, porcelain, paintings, and household goods from East Frisia that he had collected over the years. Many pieces come from the family's residence, which was destroyed in the Second World War. Since 2007 the building and collection have belonged to the Hilke und Fritz Wolff Stiftung (foundation), which is dedicated to preserving the house.
