Over het museum

The foundation of the museum was laid around 1900 by the Westerholt innkeeper and organist Wilhelm Schnitzler with a private collection. The pieces that survived the Second World War formed the basis in 1954 for the village's local history museum, which was initially housed at Haus Freiheit 1 in the Altes Dorf. The physician and local historian Dr. Josef Deitmer, as initiator, gathered many further objects.

Since August 2009 the collection has been housed in the rooms of the historic Café Oelmann on Schlossstraße, which existed from 1907 to 2004. The former dining rooms, bakery, and kitchen as well as the former flour store on the upper floor are used. The operator is the Heimatverein Westerholt, founded in 1914, whose members run the museum on a volunteer basis.

The exhibition gives an insight into everyday life in earlier decades: on view are, for example, an old tower clock, a model of the old village, a historic kitchen, sewing machines, cameras, tube radios and radio cabinets, mementos of the former Altbier brewery Hackert, tools for woodworking and brickmaking, and an old police bicycle. A display commemorates Anna Spiekermann, the last victim of witch persecution in the Vest Recklinghausen.
