Over het museum

The museum goes back to the Angermünder Verein für Heimatkunde (local history association), which founded it on October 28, 1913. For the 90th birthday of the writer Ehm Welk (1884–1966), born in Biesenbrow, a memorial site was added in 1974 at Puschkinallee 10; most recently the local history museum and the Welk memorial worked together there as the Ehm Welk- und Heimatmuseum.

In 2010 the town of Angermünde acquired the double house at Hoher Steinweg 17/18 on the market square, which had stood empty since the 1990s, and soon afterward designated it as the future museum site. The two houses were built in 1692–1695 and served, among other things, as the inn "Goldener Adler," as the Hotel Reichshalle with a ballroom, and from 1911 as a cinema. After a renovation from 2017 to 2020, funded by the federal government, the state, the EU, and the Hermann-Reemtsma-Stiftung, Haus Uckermark opened in October 2020 as the shared home of the museum, storage depot, and tourist information office.

The permanent exhibition "Geschichte & Geschichten" (History & Stories) combines, in five rooms, Welk's fictional world around the village of Kummerow with objects from the collection of around 25,000 pieces – from a Neolithic stone ax and Bronze Age finds to plunder from the Thirty Years' War. The house also shows changing special exhibitions and conducts research on the Uckermark as a literary landscape.
