Heimatmuseum Hiddensee
Museum on the island history of Hiddensee in the old sea rescue station in Kloster, with a replica of the Hiddensee gold treasure.
Over het museum
The Heimatmuseum Hiddensee is housed in the village of Kloster in one of the oldest buildings, the sea rescue station built in 1888. As the building gradually lost importance for the rescue service, an interest group – supported from the start by the later museum director Karl Ebbinghaus – asked Hiddensee families for objects and money for a museum.
The museum opened in 1954. The sea rescue service initially kept its quarters in the left part of the first floor, while the museum used the remaining rooms. In the 1990s, the building was extensively remodeled; after the sea rescuers moved to the harbor of Vitte, they left the building entirely to the municipality. Since 1994, a friends' association has supported the museum's work.
The redesigned permanent exhibition on the second floor tells, in German and English texts, of fishing, seafaring, monastery history, daily life, seaside resort life, and the artists' colony. The most valuable piece is a replica of the Viking-era Hiddensee gold treasure, whose original is held in the Stralsund Museum; a model shows the former monastery complex. On the first floor, an amber room with pieces from the collection of Ingolf Engels, fossils and beach finds, a small exhibition on the building's history, and a plant table rearranged daily in high season present further sides of the island. The museum is run by the municipality of Seebad Insel Hiddensee.
