Over het museum

The local history museum is housed in the Hochzeitshaus (wedding house), which the town acquired in 1571 and used for weddings, guild celebrations, and other festivities; landgraves also celebrated here after their hunts. A kitchen building was added in 1582, with the wedding hall on its upper floor. After the town hall burned down in 1636, the building also served as the town hall for a time.

The core of the collection was formed by finds from excavations at the Hohenburg castle, which the Burgberggemeinde (castle hill association) initially kept in the building. The town took over responsibility in 1959, and the museum opened in 1961. Since 1974 the association Kuratorium Homberger Heimatmuseum has looked after the collection and its presentation on a volunteer basis.

One focus is the ironworks in the Holzhausen district, represented by a model of the factory complex as well as cast-iron stoves and stove plates. Other rooms show a historic pharmacy, a bookbinder's and stationery shop, pottery, linen weaving and indigo blueprinting, the furnishings of the old post office, and a medieval kitchen. The town's history ranges from the castle to the Homberg Synod of 1526 and the Thirty Years' War. Donations recently funded the restoration of the town model and the building of a model of St. Georg monastery; since 2024 a printed tour booklet has also been available.
