Over het museum

The Hüsli looks like a centuries-old Black Forest farmstead but was built only shortly before World War I. The concert singer Helene Siegfried, who came from Lörrach and lived in Berlin, had it built as a vacation home according to her own ideas of rural architecture – with comforts such as electric light, hot water, and a Steinway grand piano. Over the years she incorporated original parts of old farmhouses, including tiled stoves, painted ceilings, doors, and wall cupboards, and collected clocks, porcelain, reverse glass paintings, carvings, and furniture from the Black Forest.

After losing her Berlin apartment in 1945, Helene Siegfried lived entirely in the Hüsli. Even during her lifetime, the then district of Hochschwarzwald decided in 1958 to acquire the house; after her death in 1966, the collection was organized and shown as a museum. Since 1973, the Hüsli has belonged to the district of Waldshut, which runs it as a district museum. The building is a listed monument.

The house became known nationwide from 1985 as the residence of Professor Brinkmann in the TV series "Die Schwarzwaldklinik"; visitor numbers rose sharply at the time. To this day, the furnishings are largely preserved as the singer left them.
