Over het museum
The Heimatmuseum Wandsbek is devoted to the past of the former town of Wandsbek, which was independent until 1937 and then became part of Hamburg. It is run by the Bürgerverein Wandsbek von 1848 (Wandsbek citizens' association of 1848), which looks after the collection together with the Heimatring Wandsbek; day-to-day operation relies on a group of volunteers.
The collection has had several homes: before 1937 it was housed in the Bovehaus, later in the Villa Luetkens in Eichtalpark, where a bombing raid in World War II almost completely destroyed the building and its holdings. Today the museum is located in the former Morewood-Stift on Böhmestraße, a home for the elderly endowed around 1870 by the daughters of the merchant Joseph Morewood. In the early 1990s, the Bürgerverein and Heimatring took over the building and had it thoroughly renovated.
The exhibition is on the second floor, and the extensive text and picture archive is spread over two floors. On display are maps, photographs, and objects relating to Wandsbek companies, shops, schools, and buildings, to Heinrich Carl von Schimmelmann, Matthias Claudius, and the "Wandsbecker Bothe" newspaper, and to the Wandsbek Hussars. A model recalls the vanished Wandsbek Palace.
