Exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the Neues Bauen (New Building) housing estate and the conflicts over modernism in the villa district; extended until further notice.
Over het museum
The museum is run by the Heimatverein Zehlendorf, a local history society that traces its roots to a local association founded in 1886 and was re-formed in 1957. After the society received the vacant old schoolhouse from the district office, it opened its museum there in 1973; it is still run by volunteers today.
The building on what is now Clayallee was built in 1828 as a village school with one classroom and a teacher's apartment, and it is a listed landmark. Together with the octagonal Alte Dorfkirche (old village church), its churchyard, and a peace oak from 1871, it forms the so-called Historischer Winkel (historic corner) in the old village center.
The permanent exhibition "Vom Bauerndorf zur Vorortgemeinde" (From Farming Village to Suburb) traces the path from a Brandenburg farming village to a Berlin villa suburb – with a model of the village around 1820, school equipment from the former village school, and mementos of notable figures from the district. It currently ends before World War II; a continuation is planned. Regularly changing special exhibitions, talks, readings, and guided tours round out the offerings. The building also houses an archive with newspapers, photos, maps, and documents that answers inquiries about local history. The society also publishes the "Zehlendorfer Heimatbrief" and the "Zehlendorf Jahrbuch" (yearbook).
