Over het museum

The house in Nordsteimke was a forge, residence and small farm all in one. Master smith Johann Heinrich Büssing received permission for his own business in 1845 and began operating the forge in 1846. His eldest son Heinrich, born in 1843, grew up here and learned the blacksmith's trade from his father before going on his journeyman travels and studying mechanical engineering in Braunschweig.

Heinrich Büssing first made a name for himself with railway signal technology and in 1903 founded a factory for trucks and buses in Braunschweig, from which one of the best-known German commercial vehicle companies emerged; he died in 1929. The family had already sold the property in Nordsteimke in 1870, after which it served as a residence and farm.

On the initiative of MAN, which had taken over Büssing AG in 1971, the building was restored in keeping with its heritage status from 1984 and opened as a museum on August 20, 1988. It also serves as a conference venue.

The exhibition traces Büssing's path from blacksmith's apprentice to industrialist, with documents on family and local history, models of historic trucks and advertising posters from the company. The centerpiece is the fully functional forge, which brings the craft of the 19th century to life.
