Historisches Bahnbetriebswerk Gera
Historic locomotive depot at Gera Hauptbahnhof with an engine shed, turntable, spherical water tower and steam locomotives preserved as museum pieces.
Over het museum
In the early 20th century, the Royal Prussian Railway Administration built a maintenance depot with two roundhouses on both sides of the Geraer Eselsbrücke. The surviving roundhouse was originally supposed to have 20 tracks, but because of the First World War it stayed at ten – which is why it has an impressive gable wall on the track side and only a simple half-timbered wall on the back. From 1910, a water tower of the Klönne type with a spherical tank for around 500 cubic meters of water was built west of the tracks, supplying the water cranes throughout the station via a ring main.
After the founding of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the facility was called Bahnbetriebswerk Gera from 1924. With Wismut uranium mining, freight traffic increased sharply after 1945, and Gera became a stronghold of the rebuilt steam locomotive class 58.30. From the mid-1960s, diesel locomotives were added; in 1975 the depot's steam operations ended, but visiting steam locomotives were still serviced here until 1984/85.
The western part of the former locomotive depot was acquired in 2011 with the aim of preserving it as a living railway museum in the condition of the late steam era of the 1980s. In the same year, the steam locomotive 52 8001 and a railway crane came to Gera. Today the steam locomotives 23 1028, 23 1074 and 52 8001 are permanently stationed here; in addition there are guest vehicles, a turntable from Wünschendorf, a water crane and the former Reichsbahn cultural center, which is used for events.
