Tierisch nützlich – Der Mensch und sein Vieh

Traveling exhibition by southern German open-air museums on rural livestock keeping – from home slaughtering and pasture to barn construction and veterinary medicine, in the barn from Bühlerzimmern.

Over het museum

The Hohenloher Freilandmuseum association was founded in 1979, and in June 1983 the museum opened in Wackershofen, a district of Schwäbisch Hall. It has been growing steadily ever since: historic buildings from Württembergisch Franken are dismantled at their original sites, re-erected in the museum with as much original fabric as possible, and furnished with historic furniture or faithful replicas.

With more than 75 buildings, it is now the largest open-air museum in Baden-Württemberg. The houses are arranged in groups such as the Hohenlohe village, the winegrowers' village, the Waldberge (wooded hills), the mill valley and the newest group on the 20th century. They represent all social classes – from a wealthy farmer's 16th-century house to day laborers' cottages and a poorhouse, a prefabricated house and a residential barrack – and tell of the changes in how people lived and worked. Among them are a 1715 country inn from Riedbach, a mill from 1687 and a barrack that recalls forced labor in the Nazi era.

Heritage livestock breeds such as Limpurg cattle and Coburg Fox sheep, fields, gardens and historic fruit varieties complete the picture of rural life. The museum is run by the association Verein Hohenloher Freilandmuseum e. V. and supported by many volunteers; its branch site is the Hammerschmiede Gröningen (hammer mill) near Satteldorf.

Because of how they were built, most historic buildings are not wheelchair-accessible, and upper floors are usually not accessible; stairs are often steep and doorways low. Accessible restrooms in the timber storage hall at the entrance (building 1e), in the Weidnerhof (building 11), in the barn of the Teurershof and in the Sommerkeller (building 53). The media guide shows 360° panoramas of inaccessible rooms.
