Ju-52-Museum
Aviation museum at the Wunstorf air base with a Ju 52 recovered from a Norwegian lake and transport aircraft of the Luftwaffe.
Over het museum
The occasion for the museum was the Junkers Ju 52/3m, which was abandoned in 1940 during a transport mission in Norway on the frozen Lake Hartvikvann and lay in the water there for more than four decades. In 1986 a specially founded interest group brought the wreck to the surface; the aircraft was then restored at the Wunstorf air base.
To be able to display the aircraft protected from the weather, Air Transport Wing 62 made an area in front of the former main guardhouse available. In 1988/89 a hall was built there, which opened as a museum in 1990. Until 2003 the Interessengemeinschaft Ju 52 ran the museum; since 2004 it has been the Traditionsgemeinschaft Lufttransport Wunstorf, a volunteer association from the wing's circle.
The collection grew to include objects from the Second World War, the Berlin Airlift – a large part of the British flights started from Wunstorf –, the early years of the Federal German Air Force, and the more recent history of the air base. On the outdoor grounds stand transport aircraft and helicopters that were in service at Wunstorf, including a Noratlas and, as the most recent large exhibit, a Transall C-160.
