Karl-Pollender-Stadtmuseum
City museum in the Altes Amtshaus in the heart of Werne's old town: almost 1,000 years of city history, the Sim-Jü fair, and a medieval chasuble.
Over het museum
The foundation was laid in 1962 by Karl Pollender, a secondary school teacher and chairman of the local history society: together with friends he set up a local history museum in two rooms of the Altes Amtshaus, showing prehistoric and early historic finds as well as evidence of rural life – a collection he had gathered himself with students and acquaintances.
Because of the great interest, the entire 17th-century half-timbered house was expanded into a city museum between 1977 and 1981 with support from the federal government, the state, and the LWL (Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe). In 2003 an extension with a new entrance, a separate room for a medieval priest's vestment, and a museum garden were added. The silk chasuble had been discovered in 1995 as a grave good during construction work in the St.-Christophorus-Kirche.
From 2020 to 2022 the permanent exhibition was largely redesigned. Today, across about 800 square meters, it leads chronologically through the city's history – from the Middle Ages through mining, the brine spa, and the railway to the present – and devotes its own section to the long-established Sim-Jü fair. The collection comprises more than 5,000 objects. A friends' association founded in 1977 mainly supports programs for children and young people.
