Over het museum

The museum's beginnings lie with private collectors who gathered folk-culture objects from the region in the 1970s. In 1975 a sponsoring association was founded for a Franconian farming and crafts museum; soon afterward, the owners of the storage buildings (Gaden) in the Mönchsondheim fortified church transferred their small granaries to the town of Iphofen. The fortified church has served as a museum since 1981.

This has grown into an open-air museum of a special kind: covering around 8,000 square meters, it includes more than 25 historic buildings, all still standing at their original location in the village. They include the fortified church with its parish church and storage buildings, the half-timbered town hall with the village bakery, a former inn with a bowling alley and herb garden, a smallholder's farm, a general store, two school museums and the archaeological excavation site "archäosuntheim". The museum describes itself as the largest in-situ open-air museum in Bavaria.

From 2013 to 2015 the fortified church was renovated and the exhibitions in the storage buildings were redesigned; they cover fortified churches, the Main Franconian village, viticulture and rural crafts. Since 2020 the museum has been run by a special-purpose association made up of the Kitzingen district and the town of Iphofen, while the former sponsoring association continues as a friends' association. In 2025 a newly built, accessible museum education center was added.
