Over het museum

The Königspesel stands on the Hanswarft, the largest dwelling mound (Warft) on Hallig Hooge. The house owes its present form to the captain and shipowner Tade Hans Bandix, a wealthy 18th-century seafarer. Accounts of its construction date differ: 1776 is often cited, while other sources date the core to 1677 and report that Bandix acquired the older house around 1760 and extended it with a gabled annex containing the parlor. Its design as an eaves-fronted house (Traufenhaus) is unusual for the Halligen.

The centerpiece is the Pesel, the Frisian room for festive occasions. Its walls are lined with thousands of blue-and-white tiles from Dutch workshops, most of them depicting biblical scenes. Ceilings and doors are painted in traditional techniques, complemented by furniture, porcelain, and other treasures that Hallig captains and Greenland whalers brought back from their voyages. The room bears witness to the prosperity that seafaring brought to individual families on the Halligen.

The house got its name in the year of the devastating storm surge of 1825: Danish King Frederick VI visited the Hallig at the time and spent the night in this Pesel. The listed house is family-owned and shown as a private museum; it is considered the oldest private museum in Schleswig-Holstein. Since there are hardly any text panels, the house and its furnishings are best explored on a guided tour.
