Koenraad-Bosman-Museum
Municipal museum in Rees with art from the 19th century to the present, local history and a walk-in casemate from around 1500.
Over het museum
Rees's municipal museum opened in 1997 in the former Haus Keim, a two-story neoclassical residence from the mid-19th century on the edge of the old town. It is named after the Dutch engineer, entrepreneur and art patron Koenraad Bosman (1918–2000) of Berg en Dal, whose collection, together with the city's holdings, forms its foundation.
The house combines two focal points: art and local history. The art department ranges from Dutch and Lower Rhine painters of the 19th century to works by contemporary artists from the region; one room is dedicated to the Rees painter Hein Scholten (1894–1967). The local history department leads from early settlement through the period as a fortified town to the modern era, including a replica of the 1228 charter granting town rights.
A special feature lies beneath the building: a casemate of the former town fortifications, laid out around 1500 and built for lighter guns, which can now be walked through. Since 2014 a room on Jewish traditions, with objects rescued from the Rees synagogue, has also commemorated the town's Jewish community.
With an extension, the museum has just over 400 square meters of exhibition space, around 100 square meters of which are for changing exhibitions. The program also includes tours, lectures and a regular painting exchange.
