Over het museum

The foundation of the museum was laid by Axel Bruchhäuser, co-owner of the furniture maker Tecta, who collected chairs related to the cantilever chair over decades, searching for the origin of the tubular steel chair with only two legs. In 1979 he first showed the collection as a chair museum at Burg Beverungen. The term Kragstuhl (cantilever chair) goes back to Heinz Rasch, who compared the construction to the projecting upper floors of half-timbered houses.

From 2003 new exhibition halls were built on the Tecta site in Lauenförde, the museum moved there in 2004, and another hall followed in 2007. They were designed by the British architect couple Alison and Peter Smithson; it was Peter Smithson's last work. The visible steel structure is painted red on the outside and white on the inside; ten chairs sit atop tall supports as the installation "The Ten Chairs of Lauenförde", and a red steel tower marks the access to the "Tecta Landscape".

With around a thousand objects, the cantilever chair collection traces the path from the rigid cantilever chair to the springy Freischwinger. In addition there is an archive with more than a hundred originals by the French designer Jean Prouvé, the collection "Urmodelle der Moderne" (prototypes of modernism) from Schinkel's cast-iron chairs to Stefan Wewerka, the "Anonyme Aristokraten" (anonymous aristocrats) with furniture by unknown designers, as well as archives on the Smithsons and on Wewerka. Today Christian and Daniela Drescher continue the collection and combine historic pieces with the company's current designs.
