Kreismuseum Syke
Open-air museum of cultural history and regional museum of the district of Diepholz with historic farm buildings and the Bronze Age Gessel Gold Hoard.
Over het museum
Kreismuseum Syke was established in 1938, when the then district of Grafschaft Hoya acquired a plot of just over one hectare on the edge of Syke, on the street Herrlichkeit, in order to set up a district local history museum there. The first building was a Lower Saxon hall house from 1747 from Hackfeld, which was dismantled and rebuilt here. For decades teachers ran the museum on a voluntary basis, before a full-time scholarly director followed in 1989.
Over time further historic buildings from the region were added, including a storehouse from Ochtmannien, a grain storehouse from Wührden built around 1650 in the Weser Renaissance style, a bakehouse, an agricultural barn, a sheepfold, a wheelwright's workshop, and a working sawmill. From 1977 to 1980 a modern exhibition and administration building was built, and in the early 2000s the children's museum in the style of a village school.
Since 2006 the museum has been a municipal enterprise (Eigenbetrieb) of the district of Diepholz, which since 2007 has also included the Dümmer-Museum. From 2018 to 2020 the most recent building was added, the Forum Gesseler Goldhort, which shows the Bronze Age gold treasure discovered in 2011 during the construction of a natural gas pipeline as well as other excavation finds from the district.
In terms of content, the museum is devoted to everyday life in the countryside and small towns from the Stone Age to the postwar period, with a focus on the past 300 years: living and farming in the farmhouse, crafts and trades, school and childhood, the archaeology of the region, and the work of the Syke painter Werner Kühl.
