Over het museum
The kult is the successor to the Hamaland-Museum, built up by the Heimat- und Altertumsverein der Vredener Lande (local history and antiquities society), founded in 1926. A local heritage room grew into a museum in 1938, housed in the former “Gasthaus zum Heiligen Geist,” the almshouse of the Vreden women's foundation built around 1660. From 1969, a farmstead with relocated farm buildings was added in the town park, and in the 1970s the museum became a district museum jointly run by the Borken district, the town of Vreden, and the local history society.
As part of the Regionale 2016 structural development program, a “historical memory” of the region was created on the same site, bringing together the museum, the district and town archives, the Landeskundliches Institut (institute for regional studies), and a specialist library under one roof. Designed by Pool Leber Architekten, the new building, more than 100 meters long, was erected along the dammed town moat and incorporates the old almshouse and the Pulverturm (powder tower). Construction began in January 2015, and the kult opened in July 2017; the building has received several architecture awards, including the Westfälischer Preis für Baukultur in 2025.
The permanent exhibition revolves around the nearby national border with the Netherlands: boundary stones, peat cutting, river trade, customs and smuggling, as well as the denominational divide, illustrated for example by an altar cabinet used for secret Masses. A second section is devoted to the Vreden women's foundation, dissolved in 1810, with precious vestments such as the Sixtus chasuble and a canoness who appears as a hologram. In the almshouse, an open storage area displays, among other things, a collection of around 3,000 oil and kerosene lamps.

Das Damenstift Vreden – Artworks, reliquaries, and liturgical vestments such as the Sixtus chasuble tell the story of the aristocratic women's foundation; a canoness appearing as a hologram introduces visitors to its daily life.
