Over het museum

The museum's roots go back to the Verschönerungsverein (beautification society) founded in 1892, which renamed itself Heimatverein Grafenwöhr in 1932 and in the same year set up a local history museum in the old parsonage. The building was damaged in a bombing raid in the Second World War, and part of the collection was lost. In 1956 the museum moved into the Kastenhaus, a building completed in 1532 that formerly housed the district steward and after the war had served as an emergency school, military hospital, and refugee accommodation.

At the suggestion of the Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern, a military history department was added: in 1989 the exhibition on the history of the military training area opened in a new building, in 1990 followed the show on soldier life from colorful tunic to combat uniform, and the museum was henceforth called "1. Oberpfälzer Kultur- und Militärmuseum". After the renovation of the Kastenhaus in 1992 and the creation of a walk-in storage display on agriculture and crafts, the cultural department was fundamentally redesigned in 2015; since then the museum has carried its present name.

At the center is the close interweaving of the town and the military training area, which was laid out from 1908, housed a large prisoner-of-war camp in the First World War, and was expanded in the 1930s at the expense of numerous villages. Since 1945 the US Army has used the site, which still shapes life together in Grafenwöhr today. This is also recalled by the room on Elvis Presley, opened in 2021, who was here on maneuvers as a soldier in 1958; on view is, among other things, the grand piano on which he played in a bar. In 2024 a new foyer was added.
