Over het museum

The KulturAmbulanz was founded in 1987 on the initiative of five committed individuals at Klinikum Bremen-Ost. The goal was to open the clinic to the wider city and to use art and culture to break down prejudices against people with mental illness. The Krankenhaus-Museum (hospital museum) was added in 1989.

The museum is located in a listed courtyard building of the St.-Jürgen-Asyl, opened in 1904, which was the nucleus of today's hospital. It tells the history of psychiatry in Bremen from its beginnings through the medical crimes of the Nazi era to the reforms of recent decades. Since 2023, it has shown a redesigned permanent exhibition centered on the life stories of patients, relatives, and staff. Together with the "Irrstern" memorial in the hospital park, it also serves as a memorial site for the Bremen victims of Nazi "euthanasia."

The KulturAmbulanz also includes the Haus im Park, opened in 2004 to replace an Art Nouveau festival hall that burned down in 2001, which today hosts concerts, theater, and conferences, as well as Café Sophie, run jointly by patients and therapists. It is operated by the municipal hospital group Gesundheit Nord, with support from the Förderverein Haus im Park (friends' association). In 2020, the hospital museum received the museum quality seal of the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen.
