Over het museum

Since 2016 the Kulturquartier Mecklenburg-Strelitz has brought together several cultural institutions under one roof in the center of the residence town of Neustrelitz, between the market and the palace garden: the museum, the city library, the Karbe-Wagner-Archiv, and a café. It is operated by a non-profit company (gGmbH).

The core of the museum goes back to the Museum der Stadt Neustrelitz founded in 1973, which was built on private collections. It was meant to replace the Landesmuseum (state museum) of Mecklenburg-Strelitz that was lost in 1945. In 2016 the collection of around 800 exhibits moved into the new Kulturquartier.

The building on Schloßstraße was erected around 1900 as the Imperial Post Office in a style inspired by Romanesque and Gothic; on the same site the ducal mint had been located in the 18th century. Until 2000 the building served the postal and telecommunications services. After the city acquired it in 2008, it was comprehensively renovated and supplemented with a covered inner courtyard with reading and exhibition areas.

The permanent exhibition tells the roughly 300-year history of the state of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A dedicated room shows original furnishings from the lost Neustrelitz residence palace; further themes include the expansion of the town in the 19th century and the Peaceful Revolution of 1989. Media stations, an audio guide in the style of a radio play, and a digital family rally round out the offering.
