Eva Frankfurther – Das Leben malen

More than 40 paintings and works on paper by the Berlin artist who fled to London in 1939 and captured the everyday lives of immigrant and working-class families in the East End.

Over het museum

The building on the edge of the Grunewald forest was constructed from 1939 to 1942 to designs by architect Hans Freese as a state studio for Arno Breker, the most prominent sculptor of the Nazi regime, who supplied sculptures for the monumental buildings of the planned "Welthauptstadt Germania" (World Capital Germania). It served mainly representational purposes; due to bomb damage, Breker was able to use the rooms only briefly.

After 1945, the building was first used by the occupying powers, then by the Berlin stonemasons' guild. In 1949, sculptor Bernhard Heiliger moved into the east wing, and in 1964/65 Emilio Vedova worked in the central section. Later, smaller studios were set up there for fellows of the DAAD and the Berlin Senate, and Wolf Vostell worked in the former stone studio from 1984 to 1998. Since 1996, the Bernhard-Heiliger-Stiftung has been based in the building.

After conversion and partial restoration to its original state, the Kunsthaus Dahlem opened in summer 2015 as an exhibition venue for postwar modernism in East and West Germany. The focus is on sculpture from 1945 to 1961, complemented by painting, graphic art, and photography; contemporary interventions engage with the site's troubled history. It is run by a nonprofit subsidiary of the Bernhard-Heiliger-Stiftung, funded by the State of Berlin. Sculptures by Heiliger stand in the garden, and the former stone studio now houses a café.
