Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr
Municipal art museum in the Alte Post on Synagogenplatz with Expressionism from the Sammlung Ziegler, a large Zille collection and art up to the present day.
Over het museum
The museum's foundation was the city's purchase in February 1909 of the art and cultural history collection of the Mülheim local historian Robert Rheinen. The collection was initially displayed in Rheinen's home, from 1912 as the Städtisches Museum in the Vorstersche Villa, and from 1922 in the former district administration building on Teinerstraße. A bombing raid in June 1943 destroyed this building and with it large parts of the collection, library and files.
In the postwar period the museum remained without a permanent home for a long time: parts of the holdings were shown at Schloß Styrum and in an art cabinet of the city library, and from 1970 there were its own rooms on Leineweberstraße. Only with the move into the Alte Post in 1994 did the art museum get a permanent home. The listed former Imperial Main Post Office from the late 19th century was converted for this purpose; the former counter hall with its wall frieze and green glazed mosaic now serves as the foyer with ticket desk and shop.
The museum unites three collections. The Städtische Sammlung traces the art of the 20th and 21st centuries from Classical Modernism through postwar abstraction to the present; thanks to a donation from the physician Karl Gotthelf Themel, the museum owns the largest Heinrich Zille collection outside Berlin. The Stiftung Sammlung Ziegler contributes works of German Expressionism and the Bauhaus, including Franz Marc, August Macke, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger. In addition there are a graphic collection and the care of art in public space. Changing exhibitions and the museum's own painting school round out the program.
