Over het museum

The idea arose in 1987 at a village festival in Odershausen where old tractors were on display. In January 1989, residents founded the Verein zur Erhaltung historischer Landmaschinen und Traktoren (VEHLT, Association for the Preservation of Historic Agricultural Machinery and Tractors), which aimed to collect and restore farm equipment and demonstrate it in operation. Bulky machines such as a threshing machine were initially kept in the vacant Raiffeisen bank building.

In 1991, the association acquired the barn of the Meyer'scher Hof on Wildunger Straße; dating from 1741, it is considered the oldest building in the village. After lengthy property issues, the stable, garages, and old feed silo were added, and in 2000 the neighboring barn of the Debes-Hof, first mentioned as early as 1758. The city and the association renovated the buildings in 1996/97 with support from the State of Hesse and the EU for almost one million euros, with members contributing a great deal of volunteer labor. The silo became the museum's landmark and today houses restrooms and a small cobbler's workshop.

On display are machines, tools, and household items from village life in earlier times, many of them from Odershausen and the surrounding area. Among the showpieces are a Lanz Lokomobile (portable steam engine) from 1927 and an early Lanz Bulldog tractor. The museum comes to life on event days, when association members spin, weave, forge, bake, and press fruit the old-fashioned way, and the museum kitchen serves Waldeck dishes.
