Lessing-Museum Kamenz
Museum on the life and work of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in his birth town of Kamenz – closed for modernization until probably early 2027.
Over het museum
Because Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's birthplace had fallen victim to a town fire, citizens of Kamenz had their own memorial house built elsewhere. The foundation stone was laid in January 1929; on the 150th anniversary of the poet's death, the Lessinghaus, designed by Edmund and Ernst Kießling, opened on June 1, 1931. The building was financed from donations, state subsidies and a lottery; at first it also housed the town library and archive.
After a war-related closure, the museum resumed operations in 1947. Over the following decades the exhibition was redesigned several times. In the early 1990s, during a renovation, the listed building received an elevator, and an event space was created in the Röhrmeisterhaus opposite.
Since 2008 the museum has belonged to the Städtische Sammlungen Kamenz and houses a research unit on Lessing reception. The permanent exhibition, opened in 2011, tells of the origins, work and influence of the Enlightenment thinker on about 250 square meters. The museum regularly organizes the Lessing-Tage and a writing competition for students.
Since March 2025 the Lessinghaus has been modernized according to plans by the architect Peter Kulka and expanded with additional exhibition and utility rooms; reopening is planned for early 2027.
