LVR-Niederrheinmuseum Wesel
Regional museum in the Wesel Citadel: an interactive exhibition on 800 years of life on the Lower Rhine and a free exhibition on the region's geological history.
Over het museum
The museum grew out of the Stiftung Preußen-Museum Nordrhein-Westfalen, founded in 1990 to present Prussian history in the west at two sites, Minden and Wesel. In Wesel, the grain magazine built around 1835 in the citadel, a pentagonal fortification begun in 1687, was converted for this purpose starting in 1994. The Preußen-Museum Wesel opened in 1998, with a glass annex added at the entrance.
In 2015 the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (Rhineland Regional Council) took over as operator and gave the museum a new direction: in March 2018 it reopened as the LVR-Niederrheinmuseum Wesel, which has since been devoted to the history and culture of the German-Dutch border region.
Following a comprehensive redesign, the permanent exhibition "Leben mit dem Wasser" (Living with Water) opened in July 2025. Covering more than 2,000 square meters, it tells almost 800 years of cultural history on the Lower Rhine with the Rhine as its leitmotif, and with hands-on stations it is expressly aimed at families. The texts are bilingual in German and Dutch. In the basement, the GeoPark Ruhrgebiet presents an exhibition on the region's geological history, with free admission. The museum is certified under "Reisen für Alle" (Travel for All); it is directed by Corinna Endlich.
