Mecklenburgisches Orgelmuseum
Museum in Malchow's Klosterkirche (convent church) with 13 playable historic organs and an exhibition on the history of organ building in Mecklenburg.
Over het museum
The Gothic Revival Klosterkirche in Malchow was built in 1844–1849 under the Neustrelitz master builder Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel. After a fire in 1888, the interior was redesigned by 1890 to plans by Georg Daniel and given a vaulted ceiling; in the same year Friedrich Friese III of Schwerin built the church's organ. Opposite stands the former convent parsonage from the 18th century, now called the "Orgelhaus" (organ house).
In 1997 the Mecklenburgisches Orgelmuseum was established in both buildings under the direction of Friedrich Drese. It mainly takes in instruments that were at risk of decay in unused or dilapidated churches, mostly on loan. The organs are cleaned, conserved and, where possible, made playable again, but not restored. The most recent addition is an organ built by Wilhelm Sauer in 1907 from Warbende, which was reinstalled by 2024.
Today 13 organs can be heard in the Klosterkirche, mostly Romantic instruments from the 19th century; the oldest piece is the remains of a case from around 1630. A model organ explains the mechanics and visitors may play it themselves. The Orgelhaus contains further exhibition rooms, a workshop, a storage depot, a specialist library, a hymnal collection of around 1,000 titles and a sound archive. The museum also compiles the organ inventory of Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. It is run by the Kultur- und Sportring e.V. Malchow.
