Over het museum

In February 2000, two-wheeler enthusiasts in Meiningen joined together to form the association Meininger Zweirad Museum. Their goal was to gather as many as possible of the motorized two-wheelers built in the GDR and show them to the public. The museum opened as early as December 13, 2000; it is housed in a former horse stable on private property near Schloss Landsberg.

The collection includes vehicles from manufacturers such as MZ, Simson, EMW, HMW, and MIFA, from well-known small motorcycles such as Spatz, Star, Sperber, Habicht, and Schwalbe to MZ motorcycles. The range extends from an EMW motorcycle from 1947 to a Simson Schikra from 2000. The holdings are complemented by service vehicles of the Volkspolizei and NVA, some automobiles, and Soviet vehicles such as a UAZ-469.

The members restore the vehicles on a volunteer basis in their free time; many are roadworthy and occasionally driven on the grounds. The museum attracts guests from all over Germany and abroad; in 2016, for example, the association showed an exhibition of historic police vehicles. Admission is free.
