Mühlenmuseum Lemkenhafen
Fully functional 1787 sail windmill “Jachen Flünk” on Fehmarn, with a mill and agriculture museum in the old granary.
Over het museum
The windmill at the harbor of Lemkenhafen was built in 1787 for grain merchant and shipowner Joachim Rahlff. The gallery-type Dutch windmill, with its wood-shingled body, has sails covered in canvas rather than shutters; by adjusting the sail settings, the millers could match the output to the wind and at times run up to four pairs of millstones. Barley and wheat in particular were processed here into pearl barley and groats, which were shipped in large quantities to Scandinavia and, thanks to their quality, fetched higher prices than products from other mills.
After more than 160 years of milling, the mill was shut down in 1954. In 1958, the state of Schleswig-Holstein took over the building, had it thoroughly restored, and handed it over to the Verein zur Sammlung Fehmarnscher Altertümer (Association for the Collection of Fehmarn Antiquities). The mill has been open as a museum since 1961; in 1964/65, the neighboring granary was added as an exhibition building for agricultural implements and models of Fehmarn farmsteads.
The association runs the museum on a volunteer basis and has restored the mill piece by piece over the past decades – with a new sail cross, gallery, and cap-bearing ring as well as a new exterior paint job in 2020/21, funded in part by the federal government’s special program for monument preservation. The mill, with three pairs of millstones, is still considered technically functional, but because there is no trained crew, it is not operated under sail every day.
