Museen im Rathaus Plößberg
Three museums in the Plößberg town hall on glass furnace construction, glass products, and house nativity scenes; visits by phone appointment, free admission.
Over het museum
The museums in the town hall of the market town of Plößberg were founded in 1975. They are devoted to two closely connected traditions of the town: the construction of glass melting furnaces and the carving of Christmas nativity scenes. As early as 1719, a Plößberg master mason is documented repairing a melting furnace in a nearby glassworks. Later, masons and stonecutters from Plößberg moved to the glassworks of the surrounding area and Bohemia and eventually all over the world, where furnaces made in Plößberg are still working today.
On their journeys through Bohemia, Thuringia, and Tyrol in the 18th and 19th centuries, the furnace builders got to know the art of nativity scenes and began to carve figures themselves during the winter months. Since about the middle of the 19th century, house nativity scenes have been set up in Plößberg, a custom that is passed down through generations in many families.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: the Glasschmelzofenmuseum (glass melting furnace museum) explains with tools and models the work of the furnace builders from the past to today, the Glasexponatemuseum (glass exhibits museum) shows almost 1000 products from glassworks in which people from Plößberg worked, and the Krippenmuseum (nativity scene museum) presents ten Plößberg house nativity scenes from three centuries. The house belongs to the museum network "das zwoelfer" in the district of Tirschenreuth.
