Museum am Dom
Art museum of the Diocese of Würzburg in the Kilianshaus next to the cathedral – closed for renovation, reopening with a new concept planned for summer 2028.
Over het museum
The idea of a diocesan museum was first raised in Würzburg in 1860 and taken up again in 1943, but it was only realized decades later. As a first step, the diocese opened the Marmelsteiner Kabinett gallery in 1990; the Museum am Dom followed on March 6, 2003, in the Kilianshaus between Würzburg Cathedral (Kiliansdom) and the Neumünster church.
Unlike a classic diocesan museum, the MAD juxtaposed old and contemporary art on around 1,000 square meters, organized into thematic sections. On display were works by Tilman Riemenschneider and Johann Peter Wagner alongside pieces by Käthe Kollwitz, Ernst Barlach, Joseph Beuys, Werner Tübke, Wolfgang Mattheuer, Bernhard Heisig, and Michael Triegel, among others. Temporary exhibitions complemented the collection.
The museum closed on May 17, 2026, the last day of the Katholikentag (German Catholic Convention) in Würzburg. The Kilianshaus is undergoing a complete renovation and being converted into the diocese’s administrative headquarters. A project group is developing a new concept: in addition to art from the diocesan collections, the museum is to present the history of the diocese and of the faith with objects from the cathedral treasury, as well as temporary exhibitions on contemporary issues. Reopening is planned for summer 2028.
