Around 20 wall objects from the storage depot, from a hair picture from around 1900 to kitchen gadgets, show how pictures and souvenirs shape living spaces; on open-storage inspection days, visitors can watch collection work in progress.
Participatory room about life near German nuclear power plants, collecting new objects and stories together with the public from 2025 to 2027.
Over het museum
The museum was established in 1989/90 as a branch of the Landesmuseum Württemberg (Württemberg State Museum) under the name “Museum für Volkskultur in Württemberg”. It is housed in Waldenbuch Palace, which served the dukes of Württemberg as a hunting lodge and was the center of their hunts until the 19th century. The core of the folk life collection includes holdings from the former Landesgewerbemuseum (State Museum of Trade and Industry) in Stuttgart.
Between 2010 and 2016, large parts of the exhibitions were gradually redesigned; today the museum is called the Museum der Alltagskultur (Museum of Everyday Culture). On around 2,500 square meters, it explores the lives of ordinary people – home life, work, food, faith, and clothing – told through everyday objects, mass-produced goods, and personal mementos from the 18th century to the present.
The centerpiece is the “Wohnwelten” (Living Worlds), with recreated living environments ranging from rural life around 1900 to the youth culture of the 1970s, and themed rooms on light, warmth, and cleanliness. In the vaulted, columned hall of the Dürnitz, the “ZeitSprünge” (Time Leaps) have juxtaposed historic objects with present-day phenomena since 2011, and another section recalls the palace’s hunting history.
Newer formats open the collection to other perspectives: since 2023, people with migration experience have been telling stories of personal everyday items at 13 stations in “Meine kleinen Schätze” (My Little Treasures); in the foyer, changing groups design the series “Mein Stück Alltag” (My Piece of Everyday Life); and from 2025 to 2027, the collection workshop is gathering objects and stories about life with nuclear power together with the public.
