Over het museum

Museum Erding is one of the oldest municipal museums in Bavaria. Its beginnings go back to master shoemaker and merchant Anton Bachmair, who opened a first display collection to the public in the old granary building in 1856. Following a resolution of the town council in 1873, this grew into the municipal local history museum, which moved into the Grafenstock wing of the town hall in 1902.

During World War II the collections were moved to safe storage and remained largely undamaged. In the 1950s, district heritage curator Eugen Press redesigned the rooms, adding among other things a department on prehistory and early history. Because the town administration needed more space, the museum moved into the listed Antoniusheim on Prielmayerstraße – once a farm building of the Holy Spirit Hospital, the home of Erding's first bell founder, and later a kindergarten; it reopened there in 1986.

After closing in fall 2009, the museum gained a shimmering golden new building in 2010 with exhibition space, storage, and event rooms. By 2014 the old building had been renovated and its exhibitions redesigned. Today the museum presents 7,000 years of archaeology, the town's development since its first mention around 788/790, the loden-weaving and bell-founding trades, stories of everyday life, art from the Erding area, and the Rudolf L. Reiter collection. Since 2012, the museum has also been installing information panels at historic sites in the district.
