Festung Xperience
A multimedia journey through time in the vaults of Dresden's fortress beneath the Brühlsche Terrasse – with 360-degree projections and 3D sound.
Over het museum
From 1546, Duke Moritz of Saxony had Dresden surrounded by a fortress built according to the new bastion system; Caspar Voigt von Wierandt was responsible for the planning, and Melchior Trost was also involved. The Ziegeltor (Brick Gate) was built around 1550, followed shortly afterward by the Kleine Bastei (Small Bastion). Toward the end of the 16th century the fortifications were extended eastward, creating the Jungfernbastei. In its vaults, Johann Friedrich Böttger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus conducted experiments around 1707/08 that put them on the track of European hard-paste porcelain.
In the 18th century the fortress lost its military importance. After a gunpowder explosion in 1747, Prime Minister Heinrich von Brühl received the site and had gardens and buildings laid out on it; most of the casemates below were filled in during the process. This created today's Brühlsche Terrasse (Brühl's Terrace), beneath which the remains of the fortifications have survived.
From 1965 archaeologists excavated parts of the complex, and after German reunification a citizens' association continued the work. In 1992 a museum opened in the vaults, now operated by Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen (the Saxon state palaces, castles and gardens). After closing in 2017 for renovation and improved flood protection, it reopened at the end of November 2019 as Festung Xperience: on around 1,500 square meters, room projections and a motion-controlled audio system tell of festivities, disasters and prisoners from some 450 years of the city's history.
