Museum für Frühindustrialisierung
Museum on early industrialization in the Wuppertal area with original machines, redesigned since May 2026 – shared ticket with the neighboring Engels-Haus.
Over het museum
The Museum für Frühindustrialisierung opened on October 23, 1983, and was one of the first museums in Germany to tell the story of industrialization not only as a history of technology but also as a social history. The occasion was the role of the Wuppertal area as one of the earliest industrial regions on the European continent, where textile trades, dyeing works, and metalworking flourished from the late 18th century.
The museum is housed in the Kannegießersche Fabrik of 1895 in Barmen, which despite its name served as a warehouse, supplemented since 2004 by the neighboring Reddehasesche Remise, an early reinforced concrete building. Right next door is the Engels-Haus, which commemorates the life and work of Friedrich Engels, born in Barmen. Both buildings belong to the municipal Museum Industriekultur Wuppertal, formerly the Historisches Zentrum, which also includes the Bandwebermuseum and the Manuelskotten.
After several years of modernization of the Engels quarter, to which a shared visitor center was added in 2024, the museum was reopened on May 9 and 10, 2026, with a completely new, accessible permanent exhibition. With original machines and settings, it shows how crafts became industrial manufacturing, how new forms of energy accelerated everyday life, and what the change meant for entrepreneurs, women and men workers, and children.
