On view since spring 2026, the show offers insights into the planning of the future museum, from its new visual identity to the sequence of rooms, complemented by films featuring those involved.
The exhibition on the third floor makes the mostly invisible work of art conservation tangible; at hands-on stations, visitors can try out methods and explore ethical questions.
A large wall on the second floor displays a selection of vividly colored square paintings by a young artist who discovered Concrete Art as a child at the museum.
Over het museum
The Museum für Konkrete Kunst (Museum of Concrete Art) opened in Ingolstadt in 1992. Its core was the collection of Swiss poet Eugen Gomringer, a key figure of Concrete Poetry, which the city acquired. The museum is devoted to an art movement that rejects representation and works with color, form, line, and surface according to clear, often mathematical rules.
The museum is housed in a historic barracks building on Tränktorstraße, whose conversion for museum use won an award. However, the low-ceilinged rooms and the limited exhibition space of around 800 square meters soon constrained the growing collection.
In 2007 the Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst und Design (Foundation for Concrete Art and Design) was established, which looks after numerous artists' estates; these were joined by loans from private collectors and a large design collection with objects from between 1920 and 1970. This gave rise to the idea of showing art and design together.
For this purpose, the city is converting the listed 19th-century foundry hall on the former site of the royal cannon foundry into the Museum für Konkrete Kunst und Design, based on plans by the Vienna firm querkraft; most of the exhibition space is being created beneath the hall. The move is planned for 2027; until then, the old building remains open.
