Museum für Ur- und Frühgeschichte Thüringens
Thuringia's state archaeological museum in Weimar: more than 3,000 finds spanning 400,000 years, from Bilzingsleben and Ehringsdorf to the Thuringians and the Middle Ages.
Over het museum
The museum grew out of 19th-century collections, above all the holdings of Bruno Schwabe, which the Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein Weimar (natural science society) brought together as a museum in the late 1880s. It gained wider renown through Ice Age finds from the travertine quarries of the Ilm valley around Weimar. Over the course of the 20th century, the natural history museum evolved into a museum of prehistory and finally into Thuringia's state archaeological museum.
For more than 125 years the museum has occupied the Poseck'sches Haus on Humboldtstraße, a Neoclassical town palace built around 1790 to designs by Anton Georg Hauptmann and named after a later resident, the master of the hunt Friedrich von Poseck. The city of Weimar bought the property in 1863. The building was thoroughly renovated in 1998/99, and the staircase was restored to its original state. The complex also includes the hall of the former Donndorf-Museum on the courtyard side facing Amalienstraße.
Today the museum is run by the Thüringisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie (state office for heritage conservation and archaeology). The permanent exhibition presents more than 3,000 objects across 1,000 square meters in 26 rooms: tools and human remains of Homo erectus from Bilzingsleben, early Neanderthals from Weimar-Ehringsdorf, finds from the camp of forest elephant and forest rhinoceros hunters, the rich grave goods of the Germanic princess of Haßleben, and gold jewelry from the time of the Thuringian kingdom. Models, life-size reconstructions and tactile objects bring the topics to life; the museum is certified under "Reisen für Alle" (Travel for All).
