Over het museum

The building on Amtsstraße was built around 1750 as a palace for a prince of the House of Nassau-Weilburg; however, it was inhabited by the government and chamber president Baron von Botzheim. From the time of construction, the staircase railing and the paneled music room with a stucco ceiling have been preserved.

The collection goes back to the notary Dr. Gustav Breith, who founded a museum association in 1923; in 1932 it became the Verein Heimatmuseum Kirchheimbolanden. In 1935, the local history museum for the Kirchheimbolanden district opened in the palace. It had to close in the Second World War, and parts of the holdings were looted or lost. In 1958, a provisional reopening followed in a house on Langstraße; for the town's 600th anniversary in 1968, the collection returned to the palace.

After more than two years of general renovation and an entirely new permanent exhibition, the museum opened in fall 2010 as the Museum im Stadtpalais; the state classifies it as a regional museum for the Nordpfalz. The topics range from the geology of the Donnersberg through prehistory and early history, castles, monasteries, and the Baroque residence period to living culture, toys, economy, and the revolution of 1848/49. Media and listening stations as well as research stations for children complement the objects. Since 2013, the music salon has also served as a wedding room.
