Over het museum

The sculptor Lothar Fischer (1933–2004), co-founder of the Munich artists' group SPUR and later a professor in Berlin, spent his childhood and youth in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz. Around 2000, he developed the idea of donating his work to his hometown. In 2002, the city council approved the construction of a museum together with a new city park, and the couple Lothar and Christel Fischer founded a foundation that has operated the museum together with the city ever since.

The new building was designed by the firm Berschneider + Berschneider in close consultation with the artist. The daylight museum works with carefully placed overhead and side light, light and gray wall surfaces, and cantilevered display cases on the west façade; windows open the view onto the park. Heating and cooling are provided by geothermal energy. Lothar Fischer died in June 2004, a few days before the museum opened as planned.

The collection comprises around 350 sculptures from all phases of his work in clay, bronze, iron, and plaster as well as numerous prints, collages, and sketchbooks. In addition, there is the couple's former private collection with figurative art by friends of the artist from the 1960s to the 1990s and non-European objects. There is deliberately no fixed permanent exhibition: the works are shown in changing presentations and brought into dialogue with special exhibitions, for example on the Lothar Fischer Prize. Only a few major works are permanently integrated into the architecture; further sculptures stand outdoors and in the city.
