Museum Penzberg
Municipal museum with the largest collection of works by Heinrich Campendonk as well as rooms on the mining and city history of Penzberg.
Over het museum
The city of Penzberg founded its city museum in 1994 in a listed company house that the mining company had built toward the end of the 19th century as housing for mining families. At first the focus was mainly on the history of the mining town.
Since 2002, the museum has concentrated on the Rhenish Expressionist Heinrich Campendonk, who belonged to the circle around the Blue Rider and lived for a long time in nearby Seeshaupt. In 2010, 87 works from a private collection were added, and for the reopening in 2016, around 200 further works from all creative phases – including the world's largest holdings of his reverse glass paintings.
Between 2014 and 2016, an extension with a dark, shimmering clinker brick façade was built to plans by the architect Thomas Grubert, its form recalling the Penzberg miners' houses. Since the opening in June 2016, the museum has borne the name Museum Penzberg – Sammlung Campendonk.
In addition to Campendonk's paintings, watercolors, woodcuts, and reverse glass paintings, the museum shows in the old building a furnished miner's apartment from around 1920 and a memorial room for the Penzberg Murder Night (Penzberger Mordnacht) of April 1945. Changing exhibitions place Campendonk in relation to other artists. The museum belongs to the network MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus.
