Over het museum

The museum building in Alt-Hermsdorf was built of brick in 1889 as a new schoolhouse because the old village school had become too small for the growing number of children; an extension and a rear building were added in 1897 and 1905. The collection’s roots go back to 1930, when a local history display was first shown at a high school in Reinickendorf. Its holdings later passed to the “Heimatschau” (local history show) in the Gutshaus Wittenau, which existed from 1959 and forms the core of today’s museum.

In 1980 the Heimatmuseum Reinickendorf moved into the former village school. Since 2002 the permanent exhibition has been redesigned room by room: from the campsites of Paleolithic reindeer hunters on the Tegeler Fließ and the six medieval villages from which the district emerged, to city dwellers heading out “into the countryside” and the 20th century with industry, war, and the Wall. Craftsmen’s workshops, an old classroom, a historic children’s room, a forester’s parlor, and a reconstructed Germanic farmstead in the garden round off the tour.

The museum received its current name in 2015. Since 2019 a dedicated room has been devoted to Dada artist Hannah Höch, who lived in Heiligensee for decades; the museum owns more than 100 of her works. In 2023, information on the colonial background of individual objects was permanently incorporated into the exhibition. The museum also looks after several memorial and remembrance sites in the district.
