Museum Schloss Herrenhausen
Museum in the rebuilt palace of the Herrenhausen Gardens, with the Guelph state coaches and Baroque treasures from Hanover's history.
Over het museum
The palace at Herrenhausen originated as a 17th-century manor farm and was developed under the Guelphs into a summer residence by the Großer Garten (Great Garden). Court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves gave the building a Neoclassical look from 1819 to 1821. In a bombing raid in 1943 the palace burned out; only the grotto, the Great Cascade, and the outdoor staircase survived. For decades, the Baroque gardens thus lacked their architectural centerpiece.
From 2010 to 2013, the VolkswagenStiftung (Volkswagen Foundation) and the City of Hanover rebuilt the palace on its original site, with a reconstructed Laves facade on the outside and a modern conference center inside. In May 2013 the Museum Schloss Herrenhausen opened in the two wings as a branch of the Historisches Museum Hannover. It initially focused on the royal residence city, the Guelphs, and garden design; in 2014 it hosted the state exhibition on the personal union with Great Britain.
During a redesign in 2025, the four Guelph state coaches, including the famous Golden Coach, moved into the west wing from the main museum, which is closed for renovation. The exhibition on the Kingdom of Hanover also examines the role of women at court and colonial entanglements. An underground passage connects the wings and serves as a treasury displaying Baroque valuables and everyday objects.
