Shown to the public for the first time: a restored hoard from the Late Bronze Age with axes, sickles, and other bronze objects, set in the context of the Urnfield culture (in cooperation with hessenARCHÄOLOGIE).
Over het museum
The museum is housed in a castle complex first mentioned in records in 1222. From the 15th century it belonged to the Archbishopric of Mainz and served as an administrative seat of the Electorate of Mainz; large parts were demolished at the end of the 18th century. After the transfer to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1803, the residential building was given its present, largely Neoclassical appearance by 1813.
When Hanau’s museums were reorganized following the municipal reform, Steinheim took over the prehistoric and early historic collections. After restoration and archaeological investigations, the museum opened in December 1986.
The permanent exhibition leads chronologically from the first humans in the Hanau area through the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages to the Romans and the early Middle Ages. The second floor covers the history of the castle and the small town of Steinheim, illustrated by a town model showing its state in 1560. Since 2019 the former royal stables have housed a visible storage facility with archaeological holdings, accessible on guided tours.
