Over het museum

The Jewish entrepreneur Hugo Juhl had the factory in the back courtyard of Viktoriastraße built in 1912/13 to plans by the architect Arthur Busse; the factory rooms and the owner's apartment lie under one roof. The "Vereinigte Wäschefabriken Juhl & Helmke" made table and bed linens, women's underwear, and men's shirts, and in the mid-1920s ranked among the larger businesses of Bielefeld's linen industry.

Under the pressure of Nazi persecution, Juhl had to sell the company in 1938 to the brothers Georg and Theodor Winkel from Dresden. After the war production continued, but with the textile crisis the business shrank more and more until work ended in the 1980s. Because hardly anything was changed or cleared out, the inventory remained almost completely preserved.

After the factory was rediscovered in the mid-1980s, the Förderverein Projekt Wäschefabrik was founded in 1987; it secured protected status and acquired the ensemble with the support of the NRW-Stiftung. After restoration work by volunteers, the museum opened in 1997. It shows the sewing room, cutting room, offices, and storerooms as if the employees had only just finished for the day, and at the same time commemorates the fate of the Juhl family.
