The rediscovered art collection of Schleswig-Holstein's state representation.
Over het museum
The museum's foundation was laid by the cabinetmaker and wood sculptor Heinrich Sauermann: in 1876 the city of Flensburg acquired his collection of decorative art objects and used it to found a museum of applied arts. The teaching workshop Sauermann attached to it soon developed into a school of applied arts in its own right.
In 1903 the collection moved into a stately new building in the Dutch Renaissance style on the hill above the old town, today's Heinrich-Sauermann-Haus. The neighboring Neo-Gothic school building from 1894–1896, formerly the Goethe-Schule, was converted into a picture gallery and in 1997 was named Hans-Christiansen-Haus after the Flensburg-born Art Nouveau artist.
The holdings range from medieval church art and Schleswig-Holstein farmhouse parlors to one of the most extensive furniture collections in Germany, Art Nouveau, Expressionism and art after 1945. In 1937 the museum lost numerous works in the Nazi “Degenerate Art” campaign, including 27 paintings by Emil Nolde.
Today the Museumsberg is part of the Städtische Museen Flensburg (municipal museums) and is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2026 with an anniversary exhibition. Changing exhibitions, a museum garden and Café Wolff round out a visit.
