Museumsdorf Baruther Glashütte
Listed glassmakers' village in the Fläming with a museum on 300 years of glassworks history, a glass studio with live demonstrations, and the Burger exhibition.
Over het museum
After a storm in 1715 had felled large areas of forest south of Baruth, Count Friedrich Sigismund zu Solms-Baruth had a glassworks built on this spot in 1716 to use the fallen timber as fuel and for potash. The operation only became economically successful from 1822 with the production of milk glass for lampshades. In 1844 the present Alte Hütte (Old Works) was built, in 1861 the Neue Hütte (New Works), and around the middle of the century the glassworks was considered the largest glass producer in the Province of Brandenburg. Many of the surviving residential and work buildings date from this heyday.
Later, bottles and decorated lighting glass supplemented the range. In 1948 the operation was expropriated and continued as a state-owned enterprise, at times produced demijohns, and was shut down on September 30, 1980, due to technical deficiencies and dilapidation.
Since 1990, associations and dedicated individuals have been looking after the ensemble. In 1991 the building of the museum collection began, in 1998 the exhibition on the thermos flask inventor Reinhold Burger, born here, opened, and in 2000 the museum in the Neue Hütte. The district of Teltow-Fläming owns the listed buildings, and the Museumsverein Glashütte runs the museum. In the glass studio, the manual glassmaking continues to be cultivated, which, on the museum's initiative, has been recognized since 2016 as intangible cultural heritage in Germany; merchants and craftspeople bring the village to life.
