Over het museum

The Hammer Eisenbahnfreunde (Hamm Railway Friends) was formed in May 1977 as a department of the local tourist association. Its aim was to save historic railway vehicles related to the city of Hamm – one of the most important railway junctions in Westphalia – from being scrapped. Because the collection grew quickly, members founded the Gesellschaft der Förderer der Museumseisenbahn Hamm in 1983, which has since been responsible for train operations.

In the founding year itself, the heritage railway took over the section of the former Ruhr-Lippe-Eisenbahn from Hamm-Schmehausen to Lippborg-Heintrop, about 3.7 kilometers of standard gauge, together with the station building at the terminus. The association maintains the Lippborg-Heintrop station in the style of a rural station of the 1930s to 1960s. Since 1990 the heritage railway has been licensed as a railway transport and infrastructure company.

The base is the Betriebswerk Hamm Süd (Hamm Süd depot) at the former Ruhr-Lippe-Eisenbahn station on Schumannstraße with a two-track engine shed and workshop. The holdings include steam locomotives such as the colliery locomotive "Radbod" and the 80 039, which are currently not operational, diesel locomotives such as V 200 033, V 100 2079, and 212 079-8, and passenger cars of the 1920s and 1950s, from which the so-called Wirtschaftswunderzug (economic miracle train) is formed. A bus department also preserves historic omnibuses.

Operations and restoration are entirely in volunteer hands. Income from special trips to the surrounding region and the traditional Nikolaus (St. Nicholas) trips goes toward the care and preservation of the vehicles.
